A QUESTION OF COLOUR

Hi guys, I was wondering whether you could help me out a bit? As you know, English is not my first language, so I'm a bit confused about a couple of colour names.

Which one of the below colours would you define as violet, lilac, and purple?

(all links open in a new tab/window. If links don't seem to work, check your already open tabs or windows!)

I did a search on Wikipedia and got these results:

Violet
Lilac
Purple

- which sort of confused me even more because there were so many colour samples for each colour.

There's also a page with shades of violet...

In Norwegian, we've got two words; fiolett (violet)- which I use for the darker shades of blueish red, and lilla (lilac), which I use for pale violet. This is what Wikipedia says about violet and lilac, too. As for purple, Wikipedia basically says that in the English language, this word is used for any blueish red.

I'm curious - how do you use these words?

I would call #4 purple without feeling like I needed to elaborate further except maybe to add 'dark'.

#1&2 appear lilac to me.

#3 is easy to call violet.

I hesitate to settle on violet for #5&6 but I'd concede they were in the violet family until I could think of the name of the color I *actually* think they are....

collectively i'd call them 'purple squares' using the word purple to refer to the color group but not to differentiate any particular shade.

I think that all colours have different shades/tints. On the colourcards of paint-brands there´s so much choice. Even white isn´t just white... Difficult, difficult! :)
Purple = dark
Lilac = light
Violet = inbetween the two...
in my vision :D

Best greetings, Marjolijn

1 ,2, and 5 are definately lilac, 3 I would consider purple, 4 is violet, and 6 I would call plum.

But they're all really just different types of purple... What's this for anyway?

You could always refer to a color code chart like this one... http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutorials/colors/article.php/3478921

or this one...

Trudi, Just to make things more difficult, I have to use a few other colors to describe these:

1 & 2 = lilac or lavender
3 = purple
4 = violet
5 = mauve
6 = plum

Sorry! :)

Jesse Lu, it's just an attempt to get a grip on which English word to use for the different shades - because, as I said, we haven't got a Norwegian equivalent to "purple" in Norwegian. Or, actually, we do, but it's more or less anachronistic, i.e. we don't use it much anymore.
Thanks for helping me out! Looks like you more or less agree about lilac being pale, violet being dark and that purple could apply to them all. Shirley, thanks for the links! I checked them out, and they both call the light colour violet, not lilac...
See why I'm confused?

i do see why you're confused! i've never really thought about this. i use purple as a general term to cover all of the above. if i want to be specific, i say lilac for pale purple that has white added.
plum for deep purple, mauve for purple pink, and i suppose i don't really use violet.

I think generally people would look at each of those colors and just choose "purple". But you don't want an opinion... you're probably going to get the most accurate label/name from a credible graphics, or paint, or fabric company reference. :D

I can't even begin to help you here. There are so many words to describe these colours and usually they are misleading.

Violet is the colour of Elizabeth Taylors eyes, so I would say 4 is Violet.

Lilac is just like the flower, 5.

I would define 1 & 2 as lavander.

3 is purple and 4 is almost Royal Blue ....

The end of the page but...
